June 21 is a significant day to be recognized by the exploration and mining industry in Canada.

Strong and trusting partnerships with Indigenous communities are critical to the success of mineral exploration and development.

If we want to be build world class mining projects, we cannot skip this foundational step: Integration of local Indigenous communities into the exploration process as early as possible, not as stakeholders but as PARTNERS.

Of all the investments made in this industry, we need to invest more time in building trust with communities. We need to listen (actively listen!) and seek out a dialogue on planned activities, impacts, concerns, preferences, opportunities, mitigations, and sharing of benefits. Once a relationship is built and trust has been cultivated, the partnership and discussions should be formalized in an agreement.

Today, June 21, offers an opportunity to show leadership in our sector. We can use our platforms to spread awareness. We can advocate for Indigenous rights, inclusion and reconciliation with employees, contractors, investors, the government and other partners. Let's not miss this chance to be an ally.

We all have the opportunity (and responsibility) to show leadership in exploration and mining every year on March 8, by highlighting and celebrating International Women’s Day.

Better yet, we have the opportunity to show leadership in exploration and mining EVERYDAY by seeking out women’s perspectives in decision-making process, speaking out against discrimination, creating a zero tolerance culture for derogatory and sexual comments, and fostering a safe space for raising concerns (amongst others).

No grand gestures needed. It’s the small, everyday actions that make all difference in workplace culture.

Today is World Indigenous Peoples Day. This year’s focus is on the role of Indigenous Women in the Preservation and Transmission of Traditional Knowledge.

On August 9th we honour, recognize and raise awareness about Indigenous Peoples. We use our platforms to uphold their right to live free from discrimination, to hold equal rights, and to live with self-determination.

~ 370 million Indigenous people
~ 90 countries
~ speaking over 7,000 languages ~ representing over 5,000 cultures
~ nearly 3 times more likely to live in extreme poverty than non-indigenous people
~ have been typically excluded from social and economic contracts

Exploration vs. Mining. While part of the same economic lifecycle, they are very different in many ways. Funding, size, activities, capacity, impact.

However, the expectation of responsible business practice is THE SAME.

Picture a relay race - exploration is the incoming runner on the first leg. If we haven’t performed well and our up-sweep isn’t smooth, the outgoing runner (usually a larger company) will not be able to grab the baton an hit the ground running. We need to give every potential mine a strong start.

The core function and focus of exploration companies is to search for and ultimately find mineral resources.

But engagement with local and potentially impacted Indigenous communities is a critical part of the process of finding mineral resources. In fact, it’s a pre-requisite to obtaining permit approval in Canada.

Don’t wait. Start building meaningful relationships with the Indigenous communities near your projects, wherever you are.

In 2022, expand your core functions and focus to include community relations skills. Working WITH Indigenous communities is the most sustainable way to ultimately find mineral resources.

Corporate culture can be measured by how well a company integrates its values and standards into day-to-day operations.

Whether you are made up of 4 or 400 people, be the company that normalizes Indigenous inclusion at all levels.

Be the company that is deliberate about spreading awareness on Indigenous Peoples, history and culture in weekly meetings. The company that raises the bar for engaging transparently with Indigenous communities. Be the company that considers impacts to Indigenous land and opportunities for Indigenous community members during project planning. Be the company that holds a seat on the board of directors for an Indigenous advisor or perspective.

The most valuable mineral discoveries will be the ones made together.
